“Female Drivers in Construction” pilot project on the ECR Lot 1 rehabilitation in Ghana

  • “Female Drivers in Construction Training” pilot project: 15 women qualified for bus and truck driving licences
  • Predecessor of the INZAG Female Talents in Construction (FTC) programme, in partnership with AHK Ghana and GIZ
  • Part of the Special Initiative on Training and Job Creation of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)

INZAG Germany GmbH looks back with pride on the “Female Drivers in Construction Training” pilot project, through which the company made an early, concrete contribution to gender equality in construction on its first project in Ghana, the rehabilitation of the Eastern Corridor Road Lot 1. Under the initiative, 15 women were trained first to drive buses and subsequently to operate heavier commercial vehicles.

Tema (Ghana), 15 June 2023 – After completing their training, the participants took up various roles at the INZAG site in Tema. They demonstrate every day that professional qualification and an open recruitment policy make a real difference, both on the construction site and in an industry in which women have historically been underrepresented.

The Special Initiative on Training and Job Creation as the institutional framework

The pilot project was carried out under the Special Initiative on Training and Job Creation of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Implementation was led by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Ghana (AHK Ghana).

From pilot project to the FTC programme

Lessons learned from the pilot project formed the basis for the more comprehensive follow-on programme “Female Talents in Construction” (FTC), which INZAG has since been developing together with the Ghana TVET Service and GIZ. INZAG thanks all partners for the trust placed in the company and looks forward to supporting further initiatives of this kind.
